Link Love (07/19/18)

Hi! I hope you are having a great week.

horrorposters

Friday the 13th kicked off an ’80s horror binge for us. Since then, we’ve watched the fourth one in the series (AKA “The Final Chapter”–HA!), Piranha (1978), Chopping Mall (1986), and Sleepaway Camp (1983).

I have to admit I watched Friday the 13th for the first time this past Halloween. I am a late bloomer when it comes to loving horror, and for so many years, I was adamant that I’d never watch the series. Once I finally did, it quickly became my favorite! Young me would be shocked (as are probably some friends). The movies are so enjoyable–funny, scary, gratuitous. What more do you really want from an ’80s flick?

Anyway! I’ve got a short link round-up for you today.

An all-vegan food hall has opened in Miami! We spent a week in South Beach in early 2017 (which honestly feels like 100 years ago) and had the best time. Now I have even more of a reason to go back!

I’m sure some people find this controversial, but I admit that I think it’s great: company WeWork will only reimburse employee meals if they are meatless.

A little older, but I keep coming back to this article on words to keep out of your professional vocabulary. I say “just” all of the time and have been trying to minimize my use of it.

Using the word “just” before a declaration diminishes the intent. Why make your actions appear smaller or less significant? – Kate Arends

WATCH

There’s a teaser for Stranger Things season 3! But, we have to wait a whole year!?

Neill Blomkamp is set to direct a new RoboCop movie! It’s referred to as a sequel, but it’s unclear to me if Joel Kinnaman will be reviving his role, or if it’s more of a reboot.

FOOD

This coffee soda recipe is blowing my mind. I first had a coffee soda in Nashville at Crema. It was an orange coffee soda. I was a bit skeptical, but it was insanely refreshing! I never thought about recreating it–and so easily!

Have a great rest of the week!

Tell me: What movie should we watch next? Got any links to share?

Hey y’all! How are we this far into June already!? I feel like time is flying by.

I’ve been saving things I’ve come across that were interesting, so I thought I’d do another Link Love post.

First, I wanted to share that I created an Instagram account for the blog. You can find me on IG @moveoutoftheblack. I already have a personal account, a vegan food account (@herbivorean), and a vintage clothing account (@sofakingawesomevintage), so what’s one more? 😉

If you’re not following, you’re missing out on exchanges like this:

HA! What a good dude.

Okay, end PSA. On to the links!

You know that thing where you mention wanting to go on vacation to a friend, and suddenly your social media feed is filled with ads on deals to Aruba? (I kid you not, I used Head & Shoulders shampoo for the first time in a while, and the next day, an ad popped up on my IG feed.) It turns out we’re not just being paranoid…. our phones really are listening.

Someone put together a Google Map of unsolved murders, organized by location and era.

I enjoyed these tips on managing a negative mood and generating a positive one. Hint: don’t give in to your first reaction when things don’t go your way.

A reflection on Kate Spade’s death and a good reminder that our actions don’t always match how we’re feeling inside.

What if we all just did a little less? An Elle writer takes a cue from the book The Joy of Doing Just Enough and stops trying for a week.

Jennifer Carole is the daughter of Lyman Smith, one of the victims of the Golden State Killer. She’s been blogging all about her experience now that D’Angelo has been arrested as a suspect, including the trial appearances. She’s a great writer, and it’s been facsinating to learn about the case from her perspective. It’s still a struggle, but I’m glad she’s able to start to find some closure.

LISTEN

Murder by Death is one of my favorite bands, but I always have trouble explaining them to people. Luckily, VICE put together this handy Guide to Getting into Murder by Death.

Speaking of Murder by Death, they’re in the midst of another epic Kickstarter campaign. They always have great rewards! On the last campaign, we got to see them play in a lagering cavern in Kentucky. This year, they’ll be playing in an underground cave in Tennessee! If you’ve got $10K lying around, you can even join them at space camp. For the rest of us, there’s digital downloads, vinyl, and rad shirt and poster designs. The concept of the new album–a self-proclaimed space western–sounds awesome, and I can’t wait to hear it. There are 10 days left on the campaign, so check it out and help us get the stretch goals!

The new Chromeo album is perfect summer listening!

FOOD

Let’s get together and make this raspberry frosé, STAT! The perfect drink for summer (and I don’t even like wine).

These Toasted Coconut Caramel Frappes look amazing!

This piece from the New Yorker on cancelling plans holds as true today as it did when it was written: Let’s Get Drinks.

I posted a little while back about aiming to live life like every day is a vacation–well, here’s how to actually trick your brain into doing it!!

Have you heard of Shine? It’s an app (or you can sign up for the SMS texting service) that pushes you a motivational message each morning. The service sends a few uplifting messages, then links to a related article that goes more in depth on the topic. It also lets you check in each day, which prompts you to reflect on what you’re grateful for and what you’re doing to feel good. I’ve been using the app, and I love it. You can decide what time to receive the message each day, and the articles have been really relevant to me. I read them while I drink my morning smoothie. It’s been a nice way to start the day! Plus, any site that supports binge watching is OK by me….

ENTERTAINMENT

Did you listen to the podcast Dirty John? I had no idea they were turning it into a TV show, with Eric Bana cast as John Meehan.

FOOD

I mentioned we’ve been using an air fryer lately–do you have one? Let’s make our way through this vegan air fryer recipe round up!

I’ve never been able to get into overnight oats, but this list of overnight oats recipes by Lemons and Zest is making me reconsider! Zucchini bread oats!? (Side note: why can I never spell zuchinni zucchini correctly?)

 Have a great weekend!
